Generous listening is powered by curiosity, a virtue we can invite and nurture in ourselves to render it instinctive.
— Krista Tippett.

I want to be around people who surprise me. I long to be delighted by the narratives of the peoples lives! Look, there’s a girl in a white shirt with pink nail polish and platform Doc Martins. What is she listening to on those headphones? She’s licked her lips twice, do you think someone she likes is watching her? Is she thirsty? Where is she headed without a jacket in the wind! Two women are walking backwards, arm in arm, against the tempest. Hair blown back. Upside down frowns. Skipping sideways and swinging a bag of books. Do you think they are lovers or lifelong friends? Does it matter?

Here there’s a man with a round pair of specs and a cigarette cupped to a palm. It burns despite the gale and he leans in as if kissing his bride to purse his lips to the tip. The waves lift to his feet tipped over the edge of the rock and he doesn’t care if he gets wet. A bike leaning against one jutting wall of stone. Is it his? He looks French, that dark hair and a stormy gaze that doesn’t care for the teasing textures of the sun! Moody. Disposable. Blunt. I want to kneel beside him and comb his hair with cold hands. Would he receive such a gesture?
