The Somatic Core Series: Waves that Rise
Waves that Rise is the third portal inside Stomach Alive, where we awaken the spine as the body’s inner current of power.
This class shifts you from grounded breath into upright flow—teaching the spine to lengthen, spiral, and rise without losing its roots. This is where subtle strength becomes visible form.
The spine is the central channel of your life-force—structural, energetic, intuitive. When it moves like a wave, the entire system awakens.
Your spine is meant to undulate, transmit, and rise.
Here, the body learns to lengthen, spiral, and lift without losing its roots. This is where subtle strength becomes visible shape.
Why We Train the Spine as a Wave
In this class, we revisit Earth and Water—the elements that teach us to rise without disconnecting from our ground.
The spine is both a structure and a conduit.
Physically, it transfers force, protects the nervous system, and organizes movement.
Energetically, it is the axis through which awareness ascends.
Your spine has three primary curves — each with a physical and subtle language:
Cervical (neck): expression, communication, truth
Thoracic (upper back): compassion, feeling, integration
Lumbar (lower back): grounding, emotional stability, belonging
When movement begins from the spine rather than the limbs, the body shifts from effort to organic intelligence.
The Spine as Bridge: Nervous System + Nadis
Every movement of the spine sends ripples through the:
Nervous system
Organs
Glands
Fascia
—subtly influencing your inner state.
The nervous system and the energetic pathways (nadis) mirror one another: one electrical, one pranic. When breath and movement harmonize, the body shifts into a state of coherence.
The three main nadis form the architecture of subtle balance:
Sushumna: central channel of awakening
Ida: left channel, intuitive, cooling, lunar
Pingala: right channel, active, warming, solar
When breath flows through all three, the body feels both awake and anchored.

Breath as the Wave That Moves the Spine
Breath is the conductor of this practice—the inner tide that lifts and grounds.
Long, pursed-lip exhales help release stored tension as we build heat. You’ll feel the breath travel up the spine on the inhale, and down the front body on the exhale—a loop that many wisdom traditions teach for equilibrium.
This pattern is known in Taoist practice as the Microcosmic Orbit:
Inhale up the back: awakening, clarity, ascent
Exhale down the front: grounding, cooling, integration
This breath cycle mirrors the rhythm of cerebrospinal fluid, supports vagal tone, and awakens deep abdominal intelligence.
A few breaths with awareness, travelling this loop, can shift overwhelm into clarity.
Why We Repeat Spiral and Wave-Based Movement
Your fascia responds to repetition with variation—it hydrates, reorganizes, and adapts through rhythmic, multidirectional movement.
This class reinforces patterns from the first two sessions to build familiarity with the tissue:
Spinal undulations
Spirals and sways
Squats and grounded waves
Standing Sufi grinds
These movements:
Hydrate fascia
Improve elasticity and glide
Support lymphatic flow
Strengthen the pelvic floor
Build hip-rooted core strength
Fascia is a sensory communication network.
Awakening it improves posture, hormonal balance, proprioception, and emotional processing.
Try This Now: Breath-Led Spine Wave (2–3 minutes)
Sit or stand with your feet grounded.
1. Inhale Up the Back
Breathe in slowly, imagining the breath rising from the tailbone → mid-back → neck → crown.
2. Exhale Down the Front
Release the breath down the face → throat → heart → belly → pubic bone.
Add a gentle wave of the spine as you breathe—small, fluid, effortless.
Ask: “If my spine moved like water, where would it flow first?”
Reflection Prompts for Integration
Choose the one that speaks to you today:
When your hips become the fulcrum of movement, what changes in your posture, voice, or presence?
As you trace the Microcosmic Orbit, what sensations, images, or emotions arise?
If your current inner state were a wave, what would its rhythm be — soft tide, crashing surf, still water, steady swell?
