Art of the Creator: Jin Shin Jyutsu Mudras
“Light pressure goes through the skin and into the bone. If pain is present, it’s because there is blockage and the pain is coming from the person, not the pressure. We don’t have to dig into the very marrow of the bone. All we have to do is take away the dams.”
In the summer of 2024, I was introduced to Jin Shin Jyutsu. I’d been standing on a rooftop terrace in Morocco. I was alone save for the glittering stars and sliver of moon. It was warm and windy, and when my mentor prompted me to look up Jin Shin Jyutsu, it felt like a wink from the cosmos.
After spending the previous weeks reading about Taoism, acupuncture, Chi Nei Tsang, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, I was inquiring about acupuncture.
Jiro Murai, the founder of Jin Shin Jyutsu, established the system based on his study of sacred scriptures, philosophy, and the body. Similar to B.K.S. Iyengar, Murai was very sick at one point and was diagnosed with terminal illness. He went up a mountain and spent time alone, using mudras and light energy. He healed himself by practically applying what we now know as Jin Shin Jyutsu.
“Murai studied the Chinese acupressure points, then took them a step further by experimenting on himself and fasting. He compared what he experienced to the ancient acupuncture writings and compared them to what he felt. His experiences were much deeper than what he found in the writings.”
Mary Burmeister was Jiro Murai’s first student. She brought JSJ to America and popularized this style of energy healing.
Jin Shin Jyutsu translates as: Art of the Creator through the person of compassion.
Why we do it:
Harmonize the energy flows in the body.
Work with the endocrine and nervous systems.
Create balance, vitality, and good health.
Jumper cabling the fingers (aka mudras)
Works on the attitudes (aka the emotions) that cause stagnancy, blockages, and disease in the body.
Benefits of the jumper cables (mudras)
Do them anywhere, anytime, for a few minutes.
Attune to the breath and your heart’s rhythm.
Feel the energy that moves through you.
Observe the visions, sensations, and symbols that appear when you hold each digit.
Gain a deeper sense of awareness and appreciation for the interrelatedness of the material and metaphysical forms - how the gross affects the subtle and vice versa.
How the jumper cable (mudras) works on the body:
Nerves that extend from the fingertips to the spinal column connect to specific nerve plexuses and ganglia (veins, arteries, nerves) that innervate organs and various body parts.
The nervous system affects the endocrine system, which releases hormones into the bloodstream (purification process) and affects how we feel, think, and act.
Organ flows that circulate through the body begin and end in the fingertips and toes—therefore, holding the fingers and toes affects the organ flows.
The Five Depths / Attitudes
Worry, Sadness, Anger, Trying to (Angst), and Fear belong inside fear.
Fear = False Evidence Appearing Real
Depths = dimensions of being = 9 depths total
Like the chakras, the depths are layers that guide us from the immaterial to the material realm.
“Each dimension also provides a direct foundation for the next. Thus, they reveal the implicit order in life and give us insight into the intention behind each dimension of our being.”

“Through Jin Shin Jyutsu, our awareness is awakened to the simple fact that all that is needed for harmony and balance with the universe—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—is within myself. Through this awareness, the feeling of complete peace, serenity, security, the oneness within is evident. No person, situation, or thing can take these away from me.”
