The Somatic Core Series: The Body Remembers
The Body Remembers is the sixth portal in the Stomach Alive Somatic Core Series—a practice of subtle core activation, breath-led stability, and restorative shapes that reset the belly–brain connection from the inside out.
Here we practice the soft power of stillness: doing less, with more awareness, so the nervous system can finally exhale and reorganize.
Power isn’t always heat and sweat. Sometimes it’s the quiet click of systems returning to rhythm.
Here we work with Earth (weight, structure, steadiness) and Ether (space, listening, coherence). The result is honest stability without strain, and a nervous system that finally exhales.
Why Earth and Ether
Earth anchors: restorative postures, pelvic stability, and the subtle “hug” of the waistline toward the center.
Ether attunes: awareness, breath-led pacing, and the capacity to notice fine shifts rather than chase big sensations.
This is the practice of doing less, better—precision over performance, signal over noise.
Exhale-Driven Core: Structure Without Strain
Your deepest stabilizer—transversus abdominis (TVA)—loves the bottom of the exhale.
Try it now (supine if possible):
Exhale fully through the nose. At the very bottom, feel the waistline cinch (think: drawstring), pubic bone easing toward low ribs, spine heavy into the ground.
That subtle corset? TVA + pelvic floor harmonizing with the diaphragm.
This sequence increases intra-abdominal pressure intelligently, stabilizes the pelvis, and supports the lower back—no bracing, no gripping.
Over time, breath-timed engagement builds strength that feels like clarity—movement gets simpler because the signal is cleaner.
Parasympathetic Practice: Shapes That Teach Safety
Restorative positions help the body choose rest-and-digest:
Apanasana (wind-relieving pose) to soften the belly and mobilize the colon
Supported bridge to decompress the lumbar spine and hydrate the front body
Supine twists to rinse the organs and quiet spinal tension

Belly Massage: The Clockwise Conversation
Finish with a slow, clockwise palm circle around the navel (colon’s flow). Benefits:
Encourages elimination and reduces bloating/gas
Gently stimulates the vagus nerve (exhale + touch = safety signal)
Increases interoceptive awareness—aka, “oh, that’s what my gut is saying”
Choose your medium:
Castor (penetrating, detox-supportive)
Sesame (warming, grounding)
Coconut (cooling, soothing)
Add a scent you love (peppermint, neroli) to recruit the limbic system into a state of calm.
Why This Works (Science x Subtle)
Breath-guided core work coordinates TVA–pelvic floor–diaphragm, improving lumbopelvic stability.
Slow supine sequencing biases the parasympathetic branch, easing cortisol loops.
Clockwise massage honours GI anatomy; mechanical stimulation and enhances peristalsis and emotional digestion.
In yogic physiology, Samana Vayu (navel center) metabolizes food and experience; slowing down lets Samana do its job—discern, assimilate, release.
Try This Now: Three-Minute Reset (Supine)
Exhale Belt
Inhale softly. Long nasal exhale. At the bottom, cinch the waist 10–20% and feel the spine heavy. 5 breaths.Supported Bridge (60–90s)
Prop under the sacrum. Inhale side ribs wide, exhale belly softens toward the prop. Notice jaw and throat.Clockwise Belly Circle (60–90s)
Oil or lotion optional. Slow circles, match the movement to your exhale.
Ask: “What can I release right now—physically or otherwise?”
Reflection Prompts for Integration
What do you reach for when you feel tight, bloated, or constipated—and what actually helps?
Where have you tasted the power of doing less? How did it change your day?
After slow core work, what shifts mentally/emotionally—more space, more clarity, or something else?
Where in your life needs slower digestion—what to keep, what to let go?
