on loathing

Let’s talk about Dominique Francon.

One of the central characters in The Fountainhead, she propels the narrative forward from a stance of contempt, detachment, and fascination.

I loathe this woman.
And I am this woman.

Dominque Francon is wealthy, beautiful, and intelligent. She has everything she desires, though she cannot surrender herself to that which she loves.

She chooses to inflict suffering upon herself because she cannot accept the contradictory nature of being human. She cannot open to the worst of humankind, so she cannot receive the best of it: love, truth, beauty, kindness.

She uses her riches to manipulate people; she provokes, inverts, and upsets every situation on a global scale. She is limited by her fear and consumed by detachment.

She knows herself: who she is, what she wants, and what she can do. Yet her choice is passivity; she cannot move beyond humanity’s ignorance and attaches herself to men with more thrust energy.

There is no hope in Dominique Francon.

I am full of hope, yet I get caught up in not knowing what to do with myself—what is my contribution? What could I possibly do with a world so full of pain, war, and devastation?

If I do not act, I am passive in my fascination with world affairs, like Dominique.

Yet the question remains: what can I do?

One of my teachers shared this story:

There is a great forest fire destroying the habitat of all the animals and people. A little hummingbird goes to a well and fills its mouth with water, then it flies to the fire and spits the water on the flames.

You know that won’t put the fires out! The bears say.

I know, replies the hummingbird. But it is all I can do. And so it flies back and forth.

This little bird is the ultimate expression of Bhakti: the Yoga of Devotion.

Stories have always been my route to self-discovery and my path to healing.

May you discover your hummingbird, my friends, and confront the Dominque Francon within you.

Because we all have a glittery, devilish character inside of us!

Sending you laughter and light,
Sera

Quote of the Week:

“Integrity is the ability to stand by an idea. That presupposes the ability to think. Thinking is something one doesn’t borrow or pawn.”

Excerpt from The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

2 questions to brew on:

  • Are you the hummingbird or the bear?

  • What propels you to act in the world?
