Practices to Express the Wisdom Dakinis

The Wisdom Dakinis are potent forces of alchemy in Tibetan Buddhism.

They are expressions of feminine energy, manifestations of emotional patterns, and ways to work with the energy (Prana) within and all around us.

Each Dakini embodies a unique element, energy, and insight, providing tools to release from limiting patterns and step into greater clarity, presence, and alignment.

Why Work with the Wisdom Dakinis?

Known as sky-dancers (khandro), the Dakinis are direct, fierce, and compassionate expressions of wisdom. They are free and unattached, making them a potent symbol of inner transformation.

They invite us to see our patterns more clearly and transform the five mental poisons: anger, attachment, ignorance, pride, and envy. Through this alchemical process, we sharpen our perception, deepen our self-awareness, and move toward freedom.

Practices for the Wisdom Dakinis

Practices for the Wisdom Dakinis 〰️

Buddha Dakini (Water – Little Finger)
→ Jnana Mudra (Gesture of Wisdom)

  • Mantra: Bam

  • Mudra:
Touch the little finger's tip to the thumb's tip, forming a circle.
    Keep other fingers extended.
Hands rest on the knees, palms facing up.

Why? Water flows, cleanses, and connects. The Jnana Mudra deepens meditation and insight, dissolving ignorance into vast awareness, just as Buddha Dakini embodies the pure wisdom of ultimate reality.

  • Journaling Prompts:

Transmutes ignorance into spacious, mirror-like awareness.

    1. Where am I holding back my wisdom?

    2. Where in my life can I bring more spaciousness?

    3. How can I trust the silence inside me?

    4. How can I embody stillness without collapsing?

    5. What helps me remember who I really am?

    6. What message is the Buddha Dakini offering me today?

Vajra Dakini (Space – Middle Finger)
→ Dharmachakra Mudra (Gesture of the Dharma Wheel)

  • Mantra: Ha

  • Mudra:
Bring the thumb and middle finger together on each hand, forming a circle.
Position your right hand at chest level with your palm facing outward.
Position your left hand below, your palm facing inward, and your fingertips touching the right hand’s fingers.

Why? The Dharmachakra Mudra represents the turning of the Dharma Wheel, which means awareness expands into vast, clear wisdom. Like space, Vajra Dakini reflects all things without distortion, like a mirror.

  • Journaling Prompts:

Transmutes anger into clarity and sharp presence.

    1. What truth am I afraid to speak?

    2. Where does clarity want to emerge in my life?

    3. How can I cut through confusion with compassion?

    4. What am I really angry about?

    5. Where am I being asked to sharpen my awareness?

    6. What message is the Vajra Dakini whispering to me?

Ratna Dakini (Earth – Ring Finger)
→ Prithvi Mudra (Gesture of Earth Stability)

  • Mantra: Ri

  • Mudra:
Touch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb.
Keep the other three fingers extended.
Hands rest gently on the knees.

Why? Prithvi Mudra enhances grounding and nourishment, stabilizing emotions and strengthening inner confidence. Like Ratna Dakini, this mudra aligns us with abundance and generosity.

  • Journaling Prompts:

Transmutes pride into richness, confidence, and inclusion.

    1. Where am I withholding generosity—from myself or others?

    2. What makes me feel truly secure and grounded?

    3. How can I honor my worth without comparison?

    4. What abundance already surrounds me?

    5. Where can I include more rather than exclude?

    6. What does the Ratna Dakini want me to trust?

Padma Dakini (Fire – Thumb)
→ Abhaya Mudra (Gesture of Fearlessness)

  • Mantra: Ni

  • Mudra:
Raise your right hand to shoulder height.
Palm faces outward, fingers pointing up.
Left hand rests in varada mudra (offering gesture) or on your lap.

Why? Fire is energy, transformation, and empowerment. The Abhaya Mudra is a gesture of protection and courage, reflecting Padma Dakini’s ability to burn through illusion and reveal wisdom.

  • Journaling Prompts:

Transmutes attachment and grasping into magnetic presence.

    1. Where am I clinging too tightly?

    2. What am I truly longing for beneath my desires?

    3. What brings me alive—body, heart, and soul?

    4. How can I relate with more love and less need?

    5. Where can I express beauty and truth together?

    6. What does the Padma Dakini want to awaken in me?

Karma Dakini (Air – Index Finger)
→ Vayu Mudra (Gesture of Air Control)

  • Mantra: Sa

  • Mudra:
Bend the index finger so its tip touches the base of the thumb.
The thumb presses lightly on the bent index finger.
    Other fingers remain extended.

Why? The air element governs movement, speed, and action. Vayu Mudra balances excessive air, helping us refine action into wisdom that manifests effortlessly, which is Karma Dakini’s gift.

  • Journaling Prompts:

Transmutes jealousy and speed into wise action.

    1. Where am I rushing instead of trusting timing?

    2. What action is truly aligned right now?

    3. How can I move with more intention and less grasping?

    4. What energy am I trying to control or chase?

    5. How can I turn envy into inspiration?

    6. What does the Karma Dakini want me to do next?
