surmountable

I am home in Istanbul.

I have mopped the floors, sang to the plants, cleared the living space with incense, and purchased the orange blossom biscotti I love so much from the small bakery by my home.

I like sitting on the terrace to sip my tea with the biscotti. The building across from my home, where the birds used to perch at eye level, is half demolished.

While I was away, the top three floors were torn down. Four more levels need to go, and a group of men in dusty coveralls use a crane and hose to clear the debris.

I feel overwhelmed watching them. The concrete, wood, glass, and brick must be broken down and cleared.

It is a surmountable task, tearing down to make space for what is new.

I close my eyes and visualize what the neighborhood will look like with these new buildings: the new school built in the North and the new apartments in the South.

I can already hear the children laughing and see the plants hanging in the windows—the pots of herbs and citrus trees soaking up the sunshine from the patios.

The imagery gives me hope and fills me with a simple joy for the new community. When I open my eyes, the rubble seems less daunting, and I’m excited about what’s to come.
