The girl dressed only in purple and peacock blue. There were gold rings on the walls and the home was a labyrinth of cream and eggshell white. There was never any room to pass in the hallways. They were very narrow, like the stairwell and doorways. The windows were scalloped and little crystals spun in front of the glass. The moon obscured, no one ever knew what day it was.

The foxes dug deep into the earth and met the hollowed-out trunks of the trees where the rabbits napped, and the girl found bits of fur stuck to her wet rubber boots. Talk to me from a straight line, she said to the mushrooms.

This is what it means to be vulnerable.
