halo

It takes one light to illuminate the darkness.

This light may be small—the size of a fingernail will do.

You’ve cupped the light in your palms to protect it from the elements. The light is warm, so you leave space between your fingers. The glow captures the attention of far-reaching eyes.

What do you carry that is so precious? The people inquire. They come closer, leaning on tiptoes and inhaling deeply to catch a whiff of the subtle fire.

Someone has an idea—can we all carry the light?

You spill the sparkles to the right and the left, and soon, there is a halo.

An individual steps away from the circle, and the ring becomes two and then three.

Many rings spread to the edges of the shadows, and the halos become brighter.

An echo spreads as the people wander further from the center. The reverberation causes the earth to tremble. A storm groans, and many lights are put out.

It is cold and very dark for some time, and then... a flicker.
